This is the last in the family series of UHF SATCOM radios from Motorola.
It was designed to be DAMA capable from the beginning.
This radio sold for about $40,000 new.
Basically - this was a very nice radio.
From an order placed with Motorola:
UHF Secure TACSAT Transceivers with embedded Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA)
for the Advanced Range Instrumentation Aircraft to be used for world-wide voice
and data communications. The following characteristics must be met:
1) Form, Fit and Function of the Motorola LST-5D transceiver,
2) 25 kHz non-DAMA wideband (up to 16 k/b),
3) 225-399.975 MHz frequency range,
4) 5 kHz and 25 kHz channel splicing, and,
5) +/- 1ppm frequency accuracy.
The ARIA fleet consists of three EC-18B and four EC-135E aircraft. The Secure TACSAT
Transceiver shall operate in an airborne environment over a temperature range
of 0 to 50 degrees Celsius (C) without special heaters or installation/handling
procedures and shall have a non-operating outside temperature range
of -40 to +85 degrees C.
The system shall operate in humidity up to 95% relative and at pressure altitudes up to 10,000 feet.
The system must meet the airworthiness requirements of MIL-E-5400 for
Aerospace Electronic Equipment and shall be produced in accordance with MIL-STD-810.
